Florida's dominant Week 1 win over FAU wasn't enough to break through in the AP Top 25, but the Gators are closer than before after picking up considerably more votes.
Florida remains the de facto No. 27 team in the country in the first regular-season AP Poll, earning 83 points from 23 of the AP Poll’s 69 voters, meaning 46 left the Gators off their ballots entirely. Koki Riley of The Advocate and Mike Griffith of AJC.com were the highest on Florida at No. 17, while Ralph Russo of The Athletic had the Gators at No. 18; three voters placed Florida at No. 25.
Boise State is the first team outside of the top 25 with 86 votes — just three more than Florida — and No. 25 Virginia is just six points ahead. The Gators and Cavaliers are tied for No. 25 in the US
LBM Coaches Poll.
The Southeastern Conference again has nine teams inside the top 25. Georgia leads the league at No. 2, followed by Texas (No. 4), LSU (No. 8), Ole Miss (No. 9) and Texas A&M (No. 10). Oklahoma sits just outside the top 10 at No. 11, followed by Alabama at No. 12. Tennessee moved to No. 18, while Missouri rounds out the SEC's ranked contingent at No. 23.
South Carolina (19), Auburn (2) and Vanderbilt (2) join Florida among others receiving votes, giving the SEC 13 teams mentioned on at least one ballot for the second consecutive poll.
Florida should have little trouble holding its position against Campbell next week, but a regression would likely concern voters. The schedule gets considerably more serious after that, with the Gators opening SEC play on the road against Auburn on Sept. 19.
