Florida football’s brief return to the upper tier of the SEC’s momentum rankings ended abruptly on Saturday, as the Gators suffered one of the biggest drops in The Athletic’s latest conference vibes rankings.
The Gators (5-3, 3-3 SEC) fell seven spots from No. 3 to No. 10 in Seth Emerson’s Week 9 rankings following their 27-8 loss to Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Florida entered the rivalry matchup with renewed optimism after upsetting Texas, but four turnovers and another round of quarterback questions sent the Orange and Blue tumbling back into the bottom half of the conference.
Emerson offered a particularly pointed observation about the defeat and the scrutiny surrounding first-year coach Jon Sumrall.
“Losing to Georgia, facing
questions about quarterback decisions. Saturday was truly the day Jon Sumrall became Florida’s coach,” Emerson wrote.
Sumrall’s decision to start Aaron Philo over Tramell Jones Jr. drew considerable attention after Philo threw two interceptions before being replaced. Jones also struggled with turnovers, finishing with two giveaways as Georgia cruised to victory. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, jumped six spots from No. 9 to No. 3 in the rankings.
Kentucky held onto the top spot despite having a bye week, while South Carolina climbed from No. 4 to No. 2 after defeating Oklahoma, 42-25. The Sooners dropped three positions to last place, setting up a matchup between two struggling offenses when Florida hosts Oklahoma on Saturday.
Emerson noted that the SEC’s eight remaining teams with two losses or fewer will face one another in four games this weekend, creating an opportunity for the conference hierarchy to change dramatically. Florida, however, must focus on correcting its own mistakes and securing bowl eligibility before worrying about where it belongs in the SEC pecking order.
