Florida football built on its Week 1 victory over Campbell with a master class on all fronts. The Gators left Saturday with fewer questions than they did following their victory over FAU, though the Owls were a much more formidable offense than the Fighting Camels.
The offense was spectacular again, and special teams played a major role in the scoring this evening, with Vernell Brown III living up to his Jet Award watchlist expectations. Florida's other skill position players also continued to show why they were in conversations with some of the best groups in the country, showcasing the depth and talent on the roster.
Outside of the first drive for the Camels, Florida's defense was fairly solid, but again, Campbell is not the same offense as FAU.
Here are the biggest takeaways from Florida's 52-3 victory.
Vernell Brown III is electric
Vernell Brown III put on a show this evening and deserved every bit of his Jet award watchlist recognition in the offseason. The third-generation Gator recorded 216 all-purpose yards, which included 173 punt return yards and two touchdowns. The 5-foot-11-inch wide receiver also caught a touchdown to add to his stats.
Jadan Baugh may have reached another level
I know these first two games have been against opponents that aren't as talented as Florida, but Baugh is still a different type of back and has definitely hit another gear this season. In two games this season, the All-SEC back has recorded 296 yards in 28 total attempts. That means he's rushing at an efficient rate of 10.6 yards per carry.
It's not far-fetched to say he can continue this level of running against Auburn next week and even beyond as the Gators get deeper into their conference schedule.
A healthy Dallas Wilson is the best WR in the room
The world got a short glimpse of Dallas Wilson last season in the first game of his collegiate career, when the Florida Gators upset the Texas Longhorns. In that game, Wilson contributed 111 yards on 6 receptions and found the end zone twice; however, due to lingering injuries, he was limited to only four games.
Vernell is a dynamic threat with the ball in his hands, but when Wilson is fully healthy, he is the bigger weapon that can win on the outside at a more frequent rate.
The tape continues to back Aaron Philo
There was a certain point during the offseason when Tramell Jones Jr. had a leg up on Aaron Philo. As two games have come and gone, Aaron Philo has undoubtedly been the right choice to start this season.
Philo has completed 76% of his passes with five touchdowns and one interception, not making many mistakes for the Orange and Blue.
Jones Jr., on the other hand, has also been really efficient; however, he did throw a bad ball that resulted in an interception in Saturday's game versus Campbell.
The poise that Philo possesses at this point in his career is a tier above Jones Jr. at the moment.
Florida's defense looks much improved
Florida's defense was a very encouraging sight to see in this evening's performance outside of their first drive, in which they gave up two deep field throws and allowed the Camels to kick a field goal.
However, the front seven went to work, recording eight tackles for loss and two sacks. The Gator defense should have an interesting test next week, when they travel to Auburn, which hasn't put together the most complete offensive performances in two weeks of play.
