Florida basketball enters the season with national championship expectations, and ESPN believes the Gators have the roster to pile up wins along the way.
ESPN’s Myron Medcalf included Florida among 17 teams he projects as candidates to reach 30 wins during the 2026-27 season. The Gators join Duke, Kansas, Illinois, Arizona, UConn and several other national contenders on the list.
Reaching 30 wins would be especially notable in the SEC. No team from the conference hit that mark last season, despite the league sending multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament and remaining one of the deepest conferences in the country.
Thirty wins have also become a useful benchmark for identifying teams capable of making a championship run. ESPN noted that eight of the
past 11 national champions had already reached at least 28 wins by Selection Sunday.
Florida certainly has the talent to fit that profile.
Medcalf pointed to the return of Denzel Aberdeen, who was part of Florida’s 2025 national championship team before spending last season away from the program, as another piece of continuity for Todd Golden’s roster.
He also offered perhaps the strongest endorsement possible of the Gators’ personnel, calling Florida’s group “the most talented roster in the country.” Medcalf highlighted Thomas Haugh as a Wooden Award contender and Rueben Chinyelu and Alex Condon as All-SEC candidates.
Haugh, Chinyelu and Condon have already piled up preseason recognition. Haugh was named SEC Preseason Player of the Year, while he and Chinyelu earned first-team preseason All-SEC honors and Condon landed on the second team.
All three were also named to the 20-player preseason watch list for the NABC Division I Player of the Year, making Florida the only program with three selections.
Aberdeen’s return could provide another boost. Medcalf reported that returning Florida players believe the veteran guard has helped restore chemistry that the team struggled to find last season.
ESPN’s projections were reasonably accurate a year ago. Eight of the 11 teams that eventually reached 30 victories appeared on its preseason list, while the 17 teams ESPN picked averaged 27.9 wins.
Florida begins the season ranked No. 1 nationally and will get its first opportunity to justify those expectations Monday against No. 17 Miami in Tampa.
