Florida football had a bye during college football's Week 8 schedule, but despite the inactivity, one postseason prognosticator now sees a different destination for Jon Sumrall's team
Last week, CBS Sports writer Brad Crawford predicted that the Gators would play in the Citrus Bowl against Iowa. In his latest update, the Orange and Blue are now projected for the ReliaQuest Bowl against Nebraska
on Dec. 31."Florida fans wouldn't need much convincing to make the trip from Gainesville to Tampa for a season-ending matchup with Nebraska," Crawford states. "Two recognizable brands, a manageable drive, and a chance to close the season against a quality Big Ten opponent is an appealing postseason assignment for the Gators, even if ambitions stretched
beyond this destination after beating Ole Miss and climbing to No. 8 at one point."
Florida has faced Nebraska twice in the postseason, losing both times — including a demoralizing 62-24 defeat in the Fiesta Bowl for the 1995 national title. The other was a 13-10 defeat in the 1974 Sugar Bowl.
While the Gators have never played in the ReliaQuest Bowl, they have participated in its immediate predecessor — the Outback Bowl — five times, with a 3-2 record. Otherwise, they have not competed in either of the other two iterations of the postseason event: the Cigar Bowl and Hall of Fame Bowl.
CBS Sports' Week 8 bowl projection
- Bowl: Reliaquest Bowl
- Opponent: Nebraska
- Date: Dec. 31
