CBS has announced it's placing lead NFL color commentator Tony Romo on leave after his OWI arrest in Milwaukee on July 23. The move comes after bodycam footage of the incident went viral on social media this week, with Romo still yet to comment.
Romo, a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback with the Dallas Cowboys, has been in his current role with CBS since the 2017 season. CBS pays him $18 million annually and his contract doesn't expire until 2030.
“Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice," CBS' statement read, per NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.
With Romo on leave, J.J. Watt will be taking his place alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson. Watt, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, has been at CBS since 2023, starting
as a studio analyst on The NFL Today before working himself into a game analyst role. This will be Watt's first opportunity with the lead broadcast team.
Will Tony Romo get fired from CBS?
The Daily Mail reported earlier this week Romo is unlikely to be fired, with one CBS executive reportedly telling the outlet, "I don't want to act like it's not a big deal, because it is. But it's not going to get him fired." We'll likely get more clarity after Romo's court date on Sept. 21.
