At 2-6 entering Week 9, it was already abundantly clear that the Indianapolis Colts
' 2026 season was going to go nowhere. At this point in the season, the Colts should be obvious sellers at the upcoming NFL trade deadline this Tuesday. But just because the Colts will likely recoup some draft capital for veterans on expiring contracts, it doesn't mean they will settle for perceived lesser trade offers on talented players who will remain under their control for the foreseeable future. That's the latest update from the Jonathan Taylor saga.
According to Jordan Schultz, the Colts are expected to actually keep the three-time Pro Bowl running back rather than deal him away after they rebuffed a recent offer from the New York Giants. The Giants reportedly
offered respective second and fifth-round draft picks for Taylor but have since pulled that proposal after the Colts waffled about the decision. The problem for the Colts is that the Giants were the only NFL team to offer a pick as high as the second round, and Indianapolis still wants much more than that given that Taylor has two years left on his current contract.
This sounds like posturing from the Colts in the hopes that someone will up the ante. But even if that doesn't happen, a rebuilding Colts team can still comfortably reassess this situation in the offseason rather than rush a deal through right now because of a midseason deadline:
Sources: The belief around the NFL is that the #Colts will likely end up keeping RB Jonathan Taylor unless they receive an offer too good to turn down. The #Giants were the only team to offer a 2nd-round pick plus additional compensation to this point.

I personally have my doubts that anyone will offer much more than that for a soon-to-be 28-year-old running back with more time. Still, the Colts are right to be patient in this situation with arguably their most valuable asset in Taylor, who can recoup quality draft capital for their upcoming rebuild. They don't have a Taylor trade offer they like right now. That can change very quickly and very soon.
