The Jack Smith hearing at the United States senate focused on Smith's investigation of Donald Trump took a strange turn into the sports world on Tuesday.
It began with Sen. Eric Schmitt , R-Missouri. He was very focused on whether Smith had been at an Atlanta Hawks game against the Golden State Warriors on Feb. 3, 2024. As USA TODAY wrote, "Schmitt then suggested Smith could have met with Fani Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia, about her election interference case against Trump. He noted that news was released around the time of the game that Willis and a special prosecutor on her team, Nathan Wade, had a romantic relationship."
Smith sounded confused about the game and Schmitt then revealed alleged texts about that Warriors-Hawks
games that would suggest, as Schmitt said, that Smith "already perjured [himself]." But then Smith remembered
It wasn't a Hawks game. He had attended a Maryland game against Iowa -- not the Hawks, but the Hawkeyes. And who was playing in that game? That would be Caitlin Clark.
