The Houston Rockets' top defender is staying in town. Houston and Amen Thompson agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie scale contract extension, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Thompson is entering his fourth season in Houston under coach Ime Udoka, who values the physical, relentless style Thompson brings to the court every night. The fourth overall pick in 2023, Thompson has improved each season and is becoming more of an all-around star rather than solely an incredible athlete.

Absolutely not. While Thompson has some room to grow as a shooter and ball-handler, his value as a defender and rebounder is immeasurable. He also made strides as a playmaker last year, helping
to fill the point guard void following Fred VanVleet's torn ACL. Thompson averaged a career-high 5.3 assists a game in 2025-26, and while his turnover numbers are a bit concerning, he's still only 23 with plenty of room to grow. Athletes as explosive as Thompson come around only a few times a generation, plus he has the motor and basketball IQ you want out of a franchise player. It's a lot of money for a guy who hasn't reached his ceiling yet, but Thompson's ceiling is as high as anyone's in the NBA. It's a fantastic deal for both Thompson and Houston. GRADE: A
