This upcoming season will be one of the more unique landscapes we've seen in college basketball with numerous players challenging the NCAA for eligibility in the court system. But no eligibility challenge was quite like what former Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn successfully argued to end up as a late addition to Kansas' roster.
Just don't expect Bill Self to apologize for how he's constructing his squad for what might be the final season of his Hall of Fame career.
Kaufman-Renn officially joined Kansas' roster on Monday despite playing four years at Purdue and being the No. 59 pick in the NBA Draft by the Timberwolves. Kaufman-Renn successfully argued (at least for now) that he should have a fifth year of eligibility in accordance with the NCAA's
five-in-five policy. Had the rule existed when he started his Purdue career, Kaufman-Renn argued he would not have exhausted a year in a redshirt season.
But the notion of an NBA Draft pick suiting up in college basketball certainly raised some eyebrows. And in Tuesday's Big 12 media day, Self pushed back at the criticism.
Bill Self was asked if he was being a 'disruptor' for getting Trey Kaufman-Renn.

Self argued that he didn't consider himself a disruptor because he's acting within the current guidelines. If he didn't pursue Kaufman-Renn, one of his competitors certainly would have.
Self said:
"Nobody controls when the court dates are. So, are people who did it in July a disruptor? Well, there's 21 or 22 players in our league who are in the same situation. Disruptor? All I want to do — if we don't play with him, we're going to play against him. So all I want to do, with the guidelines of whatever has been set, how do we get our best team together? That's it. There's no disruption as far as creating a situation."
In addition to Kaufman-Renn, Kansas also returned starters Melvin Council Jr. and Tre White who received injunctions for an additional year in separate court challenges.
