Playing quarterback at the University of Texas comes with a level of national scrutiny only a handful of other schools can match. But pairing that with the name on the back of your jersey reading "Manning" makes the margin for error effectively disappear. To be clear, the current controversy surrounding Arch Manning and his response to an AI-generated video featuring Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and ESPN anchor Holly Rowe would have elicited that reaction regardless of the player, but ESPN's First Take host Shae Cornette delivered a blunt reality check to the Longhorns quarterback.
Cornette not only explained her initial reaction to seeing the clip of Manning's response but also noted that his legendary football bloodline and the high stakes of playing
quarterback at Texas will always keep the 22-year-old in the spotlight, as Awful Announcing highlighted.
"When I first had heard Arch’s comments and watched that press conference, my initial reaction was, ‘my goodness, how insensitive, how immature and kind of, quite frankly, how dare he say that, especially about Holly and the way he was laughing about it,'" Cornette said. "As the day progressed, I thought to myself, ‘ok, when you have this last name and you play at this university and you wear that on your sleeve every day you have to know better.' Maybe that’s unfair given his age and immaturity level still and what he’s going through at his age."
"But that is just the reality of the situation that comes with it," she continued. "He’s apologized. He had a conversation with Holly Rowe, which I love. Now I wish his apology was vocal, was on video, as opposed to in text. Nonetheless, now we move forward. But what I do hope is obviously this is a very strong learning lesson for him. You don’t necessarily need to be laughing about a video that provokes violence, especially towards women. And so Arch will hopefully do better.”

From top to bottom, Cornette's take on the situation was well said and also highlighted several extremely important aspects surrounding it. The name "Manning" alone carries additional weight, and the situation following Texas' comeback victory over Ohio State made it even more high-profile, but it's undeniably a lesson for Arch, as Cornette perfectly explained.
