Entering a Monday night matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chicago Bears have found themselves in a pickle. While it's a non-major injury
, head coach Ben Johnson's group will still likely be without star quarterback Caleb Williams for a few weeks as he recovers from a Grade 2 hamstring strain. That means the Bears have to pivot and find a way to win on Monday night without their franchise talisman.Chicago is turning to veteran signal-caller Case Keenum, who is technically third on the Bears' official quarterback depth chart. You may know Keenum from previous stops with the Minnesota Vikings and the Houston Texans over the years. He's 38 years old now, but he is the very same player you remember. And yes, as noted, the Bears will lean
on him to try and lead the team to a win over the Eagles on Monday night.
As for who will serve as Keenum's backup, the answer is simple. Usual backup quarterback Tyson Bagent will be Keenum's backup this time around. Bagent would've gotten this start against the Eagles, but it took until Saturday for him to clear the NFL's concussion protocol following a Week 2 loss to the Vikings. By Saturday, the Bears had already installed their game plan and ran through a much-needed week of practice to get Keenum up to speed.
To be sure, I wouldn't be shocked to see Johnson use Bagent in some capacity on Monday night, but it is definitely Keenum's offensive operation to run first and foremost. We'll see how Keenum fares against the Eagles as the Bears try to get a big primetime win without Williams.
