Mike McDaniel was supposed to be the savior for Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers' offense. His motion- and timing-heavy scheme made the world think Tua Tagovailoa was a functional NFL quarterback, yet somehow Herbert and Co. are completely unraveling early into their partnership.
The Chargers are comfortably the NFL's lowest-scoring team at 14.7 points per game, Herbert leads the league in interceptions with 10, and running back Omarion Hampton is facing catastrophic second-year regression.
In short, nothing is working. So, McDaniel is making a major change on game days: moving from the sideline to the booth.
“Seems like a good action to take based on how things have gone this year," McDaniel said, "and realistically something that I’ve
only brought up because I’ve observed, I’m very confident in the rest of the offensive coaching staff and how they’re able to set the tone and communicate information on the sidelines.
So, I feel a little more comfortable to try that.”
Perhaps this gives the Chargers offense a spark, but it reeks of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Nevertheless, Los Angeles hopes to avoid falling to 0-8 Sunday against the Houston Texans.
