First-year Atlanta Falcons head coach had himself quite the dilemma to start the 2026 season. With former first-round draft pick Michael Penix Jr. still on the mend from a knee surgery in late 2025, the Falcons had something of a quarterback "controversy,"
involving Tua Tagovailoa, Cooper Rush, and recent undrafted free agent Jack Strand. Which is to say, they had a quarterback controversy involving no good quarterbacks. Now healthy, Penix showed he might be able to change that reality during a dominant 35-14 road win in Week 3 over the Green Bay Packers. Superstar running back Bijan Robinson's 200-plus all-purpose yards were undoubtedly the main story of the convincing victory, but Penix was more than respectable as a change of pace (18-of-25,
256 yards, one touchdown and one pick, over 10 yards per pass attempt).
That's the sort of competent play that could give Penix a long leash as the Falcons' starter and perhaps a real shot at the long-term job in Atlanta beyond 2026. A good sign for Penix is that, according to a report from Josina Anderson, Stefanski seems to be fully in his corner as a guy he can work with for the foreseeable future:
#Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski was heard telling folks in the building he felt like Michael Penix was going to “pull everything together” they’ve been working on leading into tonight’s game vs the #Packers, per league source.

I don't know about you, but that is a clear tell of Stefanski's ultimate vision for Penix. The young quarterback will be put in a real position to succeed moving forward. And if Stefanski has his say, this coach and quarterback could be together for years. Suffice it to say that, barring health, I wouldn't count on seeing another person play quarterback for the Falcons for the rest of 2026.
