The Golden State Warriors were a much-discussed free agency landing spot for LeBron James until he ultimately signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. Draymond Green has an indication why James didn't join him and Stephen Curry in the Bay Area.
In an episode of The Draymond Green Show, Green says the lengthy history between James and the Warriors factored into his decision to go elsewhere. James' Cleveland Cavaliers battled the Warriors in four consecutive NBA Finals, with the Cavaliers coming back from a 3-1 deficit in 2016 for their lone title win over that stretch.
"I ultimately don't think Bron was ever able to get over the history and I understand it, I get it," Green said. "... He's gonna get crushed if he comes to the Warriors. 'Ah, man you
went to team up with Steph.' ... And ultimately I think that weighed in on the decision a lot, that played a big role in the Warriors not landing LeBron."
The Warriors weren't able to land LeBron, but they kept their defensive stalwart in town by handing Green a one-year, $27.7 million extension, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Is Steph Curry leaving the Warriors?
With James heading to Philly, questions surrounding Curry's future have begun to emerge. Curry, 38, has a limited title window, and yet the Warriors' roster is much thinner than it has been historically. If Golden State doesn't compete in 2026-27, it wouldn't be shocking to see Curry try and win a title elsewhere, as he's hitting unrestricted free agency after the season. Perhaps he takes a discount deal like LeBron to play for a contender.
