The Carolina Panthers have been rolling offensively to start this season, with Bryce Young building off his resurgent campaign in 2025. Young is tied for first in the NFL in passing touchdowns (six) and is second behind Tyler Shough in yards (648).
But while the passing game is hitting on all cylinders, the Panthers are still figuring out their run game. Chuba Hubbard has been efficient, running for 4.6 yards per carry, but has only 22 attempts through two games while lacking the explosiveness of premium ball-carriers. Jonathon Brooks was supposed to provide some juice as the Panthers' RB2, but the oft-injured Texas product is set to undergo core muscle surgery and miss at least the next six games.
In need of reinforcements, Carolina is reportedly
bringing in veteran running back Austin Ekelerfor a workout today. Ekeler, one of the most productive pass-catching running backs in the NFL for a brief period, last played for the Washington Commanders in 2025, tearing his Achilles in Week 2. He's reportedly fully cleared and ready to play, so the 31-year-old would be an intriguing addition to the backfield if Carolina decides to bring him along.
Here's where the Panthers' running back room stands now.
Panthers RB depth chart
RB1: Chuba Hubbard
RB2: AJ Dillon
Injured reserve: Jonathon Brooks (core), Trevor Etienne (ankle)
Dillon has been largely ineffective throughout his career, and with no depth behind him on the active roster, the Panthers have a dire need at running back. Perhaps Ekeler can fill the void.
