Miley Cyrus is taking a bold new artistic direction before the Sept. 18 release of her latest album, Bass Persuades. The daughter of country music legend Billy Ray Cyrus has dropped her last name from her social media accounts and website, going by simply "Miley" now.
The change went viral on Aug. 31, roughly three weeks before Miley's new album and a week after the death of her godmother, the country music icon Dolly Parton. Billy Ray recently broke his silence about Miley's decision, saying he's "all good" with it while citing Parton as one of many one-name stars who helped paved the way.
"I told @miley yesterday I felt good about her going with her first name," Cyrus wrote. "I mentioned Dolly and Cher. Thinkin about it more and more … Elvis
.. Prince …and so on. It’s a natural progression for an iconic superstar legend. And the legend continues ! Looking forward to the new album."
The list of one-name artists is certainly star-studded.
Why is Miley dropping her last name?
Miley hasn't publicly revealed why exactly she made the decision. Perhaps she'll share her thoughts behind it on Bass Persuades, her 10th studio album that's slated to release on Sept. 18.
