The Minnesota Vikings were looking to continue the momentum from a surprising 2-0 start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Kyler Murray was back after his Week 1 head injury. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores's unit looks incredible and so, so aggressive. Quite frankly, it was hard not to feel optimistic about how the Vikings look in the early goings of this young 2026 NFL season.
A mid-game injury to superstar receiver Justin Jefferson on Sunday might change part of that optimism.
Jefferson had to leave the matchup with the Buccaneers around the halfway point of the second quarter with an ankle injury. He was first evaluated in the blue medical tent before it was determined that his injury needed further review in the locker room. The
extent and severity of Jefferson's injury are not known at the time of this writing. It seems unclear, at best, that the four-time All-Pro will return to play in the second half.

With an ankle injury, it is encouraging that Jefferson was able to walk off the field under his own power. If Jefferson doesn't return to play against the Buccaneers, that's probably also more out of an abundance of caution for the health of the Vikings' best player rather than a clear indication of a long-term injury. No one wants to rush Jefferson back and potentially exacerbate his injury with a long season ahead of the Vikings.
Still, you never love to see one of the NFL's premier stars leave the field with an injury. Here's hoping whatever happened to Jefferson is minor, for the general football fan's sake.
Who is Justin Jefferson's backup on the Vikings?
Tai Felton is listed as Jefferson's backup on the Vikings. Felton is in his second NFL season after being drafted in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
