It finally happened. Fewer than three years after the Arizona Cardinals used the fourth pick of the NFL Draft to make Marvin Harrison Jr. their franchise wideout, the team shipped him out of Phoenix.
It was a move many had expected following a slow start to his third season as a pro. Harrison was a modest disappointment in his rookie season, fell off in an injury-riddled 2025 and has largely been a non-factor in 2026. He had only five catches for 85 yards in the first four games of the year, then was deactivated for Week 5 as trade rumors swirled.
Now, he's a Houston Texan, filling an immediate need for depth behind top receiver Nico Collins.
Trade! The Cardinals are sending WR Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Texans. Harrison reunites with C.J. Stroud
in Houston, while Arizona adds draft capital and moves on from their former No. 4 overall pick.

Harrison will get the chance to reunite with former Ohio State teammate C.J. Stroud, who has been playing some of his best football as a pro in 2026 but was left with an 0-4 record to show for it. Who got the better end of this deal?
Let's break it down.
The Arizona Cardinals send WR Marvin Harrison Jr. and a 2027 seventh round pick to the Houston Texans for a 2027 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick
Let's start with Arizona. No longer do they have to fret over the fifth year option on Harrison's rookie contract (they likely weren't as concerned about it after his non-existent start to 2026 anyway). Michael Wilson emerged as the team's top wideout, and Trey McBride's presence gives whomever is slinging passes a steady 1-2 punch atop the depth chart. Harrison couldn't create space as a third option, and whether that's a byproduct of effort or simply an inability to create space the way he did in college, it was clear his name value was much higher than his on-field value.
Getting a second round pick for a player with five catches in four games is a haul. It's even better when you consider how much young talent Arizona needs. With Houston just notching its first win today, that's going to be a top 50 pick that could even sneak into the top 40 under the right circumstances. The Cardinals only had their own picks for the upcoming draft but added one that should bring an immediate contributor to the roster next season.
While losing receiving depth for a team likely to break Carson Beck into the lineup this fall hurts, this was absolutely the right decision. Arizona turned a non-contributor soaking up a roster spot into a top 50 draft selection. That's a great deal.

The Texans had to get a bit desperate after an 0-4 start. C.J. Stroud is having a strong year, but it hasn't mattered with his defense backsliding. More importantly, Nico Collins has been the only consistent target for the franchise whilst on the field and he's already missed a pair of games this season.
Houston added Kayshon Boutte in the preseason, but he's failed to make an impact in anything more than a complementary role. With Jayden Higgins out for the year with a torn ACL, something had to change if Houston was going to have any hope of a playoff berth.
Thus, an expensive deal for a 24-year-old wideout once considered a can't-miss prospect. Stroud helped Harrison Jr. thrive when they were both Buckeyes, quarterbacking him to an All-American 2022 season before turning pro (Harrison was an 2023 All-American as well, this time with Kyle McCord at QB). The hope is familiarity sparks a return to the potential seen, albeit in flashes, back in the wideout's rookie campaign.
That's a bold bet! Harrison Jr. hasn't had a 100-yard game in nearly two years despite playing for an offense that's thrown the hell out of the ball while trailing often. He's missed time due to injury, suffered from concentration drops (10 in 202 career targets) and has seen his average separation target dip to a career-low 1.6 yards this fall -- a number that would rank138th best among qualified receivers if he'd had enough passes thrown his way.
There are several ways this could go wrong, especially for an 0-4 team whose every loss makes the pick it just traded away more valuable. Harrison Jr. has talent, but has been unable to apply it as a pro and gotten worse as he's developed. Betting a second round pick on a change of scenery is at least a bit desperate, but that's where Houston is right now.
