Kavinsky, a French DJ who's primarily known for his song Nightcall in the 2011 film Drive, has died at age 50. The musician, who was born Vincent Belorgey, was found dead in his home, according to the Paris prosecutor's office.
Nightcall became a electropop phenomenon after being featured early in Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn's moody thriller starring Ryan Gosling. The song has gone on to appear in The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) and Netflix's Riverdale. Childish Gambino also sampled the song on R.I.P. (2012), plus Kavinsky performed it live at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Kavinsky has released two studio albums, starting with OutRun in 2013 then Reborn in 2022. Nightcall was on OutRun. He's also tried his hand at acting, appearing in films such as Ultranova
(2005) and Steak (2007) before pivoting to music.
DJ Kavinsky cause of death
Kavinsky's cause of death has not officially been announced yet. However, the French newspaper Le Figaro reported stroke being a possibility, as police told them Kavinsky had been suffering from headaches over the preceding days. This has not been confirmed.
"An inquiry into the cause of death has been opened to determine the circumstances of the death, as first responders found no suspicious elements at the scene," the Paris prosecutor's office said, per USA TODAY entertainment reporter Brendan Morrow.
Kavinsky will be deeply missed.
