On Saturday, we published a story about a 648-pound blue marlin caught off San Diego last week, and the rarity of such a catch.
Blue marlin are more commonly encountered in tropical or warm-temperate waters. Years can pass without a blue marlin being hooked off Southern California.
But as many people know, this has been a crazy summer in terms of exotic species entering Southern California waters during an intensifying "Super" El Niño.
The 648-pound blue marlin, caught Sept. 14 aboard the Pegasus out of Fisherman’s Landing, set a regional "benchmark" in terms of weight.

Fisherman’s Landing dubbed the giant marlin, simply, "648lbs El Niño fish."
