When Jimmy Butler went down with a torn right ACL in mid-January 2026, the Golden State Warriors immediately felt his absence. Butler had worked extremely well alongside Steph Curry, Draymond Green and the rest of the Warriors, and at the very least, it looked like a team capable of creating some postseason chaos.
Unfortunately, Butler’s injury pushed the chaos timeline back a season, and in the eyes of some, eliminated it entirely. But if you ask the 37-year-old about his impending return, his thoughts aren’t just clear; they’re blunt and also a warning to the rest of the league. Speaking with ESPN's Anthony Slater, Butler made it clear that when he's back on the court, the entire league will square off with the same player they've seen year in and year out.
"I just want to help those guys win another [title], man," Butler said. "And get me one. I felt I let them down. Now, as I'm going through this rehab process, as I'm starting to move and run and jump, I'm like, oh [expletive], I could still do it. And that's why I say y'all [expletive] going to be real shocked if y'all think I'm going to come back and be some bum [expletive] player."
There's a fair argument that this might be the perfect quote to sum up Butler. From his on-court personality to his skill set and unwavering confidence, I would have been shocked to hear anything less from him. To take it a step further, Butler was quick to point out that when he returns, he knows defenses will still be overwhelmed in their efforts to stop him.
"I bet y'all not going to leave me. I bet no team going to be like, 'Oh, no, don't guard that guy.' They're not going to do that," Butler said. "I bet whenever I step on the floor, they're going to send more than one body. I bet you're still going to foul me. So what are we talking about here?"
How good can Jimmy Butler be for Warriors after returning from injury?
Butler's postseason persona, "Playoff Jimmy," may not directly correlate with his return from injury, but it sure feels like his mindset ahead of returning to the floor is similar to what earned him that nickname. USA Today and FTW's Bryan Kalbrosky previously highlighted Butler's upside while discussing the NBA's top 100 players, saying that when he's healthy, the Warriors star is a top-25 player in the league.
There's no question that the popular belief around here is that Butler's return won't include much, if any, fall-off in production. However, the overarching question is how good this Warriors team can be when he returns to rejoin Curry, Green, and the rest of the squad for the 2026-27 season.
