Cam Skattebo will be no stranger to touching the football in his second NFL season.
The New York Giants running back saw his rookie season cut short after just eight games when he suffered a dislocated ankle, fractured fibula and a ruptured deltoid ligament during a 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Skattebo's recovery has been a major offseason topic of conversation — particularly when he fell while attempting a backflip at an event — but he said last week that he is ready for a significant workload in 2026.
“I had a couple talks with him letting him know, hey, I'm gonna be ready to go. And he trusted me, and he trusted the fact that I'm ready to go," Skattebo said on USA TODAY Sports' "Sports Seriously." "He got a little snippet of it in our
first preseason game, and he's gonna get a big snippet on Sunday Night Football. So I'm excited to show him what I have, and we talk a lot, but when he walks up to me and tells me, 'Are you ready for 20-plus carries a game?' I think I'm in a pretty good spot."
Averaging 20 carries would certainly be an increase in usage for Skattebo, who averaged just 12.6 attempts per game as a rookie and only had 20 rushing attempts in one game. Still, it seems new coach John Harbaugh trusts that he can take on a bigger role in Year 2.
After totaling 410 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie while averaging 4.1 yards per carry, Skattebo could be poised for a big second season as a pro. His health will be a question, but it seems he's feeling good again ahead of Week 1.
