Aaron Donald returning to the Los Angeles Rams has felt like a given over the last few weeks. The 10-time Pro Bowler's L.A. reunion may not be in stone after all, however.
After Thursday's preseason win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Sean McVay revealed he's not quite sure what the future holds for Donald, but noted the door is still open for his return.
“I think all of those things are up in the air,” McVay said. “I wish I had a little bit better ability to give you some clarity, but it’s really one of those deals that, what we’re doing we’re focusing on this football team. Aaron knows that if he wants to be able to do that, that’s something that we absolutely want to be able to entertain and figure out, and that’s really all there is to it right
now.”
Donald hasn't played in the NFL since 2023 and is currently 35. Still, he's known for keeping himself in impeccable shape, and the Rams would likely exercise caution by playing him in a situational role, perhaps only on passing downs until the playoffs.
The Rams' offseason trade for defensive end Myles Garrett made the Donald possibility even more tantalizing, as they'd have a combined five Defensive Player of the Year awards. Los Angeles is in win-now mode with aging veterans such as Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams, so bringing Donald back would be in line with their strategy.
With the Rams' season beginning Sept. 10 in Australia, we'll likely get further clarity on whether Donald will return soon.
