The Dallas Cowboys need answers, and they need them quickly. After a week when the Cowboys were fortunate that the rest of the division went 0-1-2, their 24-16 loss to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers made plenty of headlines. However, the Cowboys' issues extend beyond one week, and the defense has been a glaring concern.
This outlook led the Cowboys to hire longtime NFL coach/coordinator Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, a move that raised more than a few eyebrows given the struggles of defensive coordinator Christian Parker's unit. Parker has coached at the collegiate and pro levels since 2013, taking his first defensive coordinator job this year after serving as the passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach for
the Philadelphia Eagles.
While Pettine's hire comes as the Cowboys defense takes some heat in the media, longtime Cowboys insider Ed Werder shared a tidbit about the decision. Werder stated on X that NFL coaches he's spoken to who know Pettine and the dynamics of the situation in Dallas "believe the more influence and responsibility Pettine has, the better for the team."
Werder also added a quote from a head coach, who had some strong words about the move and, more specifically, Parker.
"They finally hired a real coach. Pettine is legit. Dallas will walk away with that division now," One HC who had Pettine on his staff told Werder.
The #Cowboys are carefully representing the hiring of Pettine as someone who is here to support Christian Parker and offer advice based on his experience. But NFL coaches I’ve spoken to who know Pettine and the dynamics of the situation with the Cowboys believe the more influence… pic.twitter.com/A5bk3wxpN6

Those strong words are also a surprisingly blunt assessment of how the Cowboys' defense and Parker are viewed, at least by one coach.
While it's still early in the season, Jerry and Stephen Jones obviously believed bringing in a veteran coach to help with the defense was a move the Cowboys needed. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, and specifically how big a role Pettine has in helping on defense alongside Parker.
