One of the biggest names in NFL history, Mike Ditka, died Friday at age 86. Ditka's family announced the news in a statement that was posted by Walter Payton's son, Jarrett Payton. Ditka was a Hall of Fame tight end who played six years for the Chicago Bears and led the franchise to a Super Bowl win in 1985. His playing and coaching career was followed by stops in broadcasting with NBC, CBS and ESPN.
"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka," read his family's statement. "While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. Mike will
be missed beyond measure and remembered forever."
The news of Ditka's death swept through the NFL, and Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell was in the middle of his press conference on Friday when he learned of it. Campbell immediately sent thoughts and prayers to Ditka's family and shared an incredible memory of him. When Campbell entered the league in 1999, Ditka was the coach of the New Orleans Saints, and Campbell revealed the incredible fashion in which a pre-draft meeting with him played out.

Campbell and Ditka shared an obvious bond, as both were tight ends in their playing days. Hearing the story of how their pre-draft meeting kicked off with Campbell entering the office to a puff of smoke and Ditka's cigar is about as perfect as imaginable.
