The University of Alabama-Birmingham set its own football program back years by hiring former NFL quarterback and television analyst Trent Dilfer as head coach in 2023. Even though interim head coach Bryant Vincent had guided the Blazers to a 7-6 record the season before and had the support of players, the university opted for a flashy hire that would draw headlines even if its new head coach had minimal experience drawing plays.
Dilfer came to Division I college football with four seasons of coaching experience... all at Nashville's Lipscomb Academy, a private high school. While he led the Mustangs to a pair of state championships, his rise up the ranks was astronomical, historically ripe for failureand, frankly, undeserved. Even Deion Sanders
had to make Jackson State an FCS force before earning his call to the big time. Dilfer, on the other hand, had a Super Bowl ring and an uncanny ability to come of as a humorless scold, even on the take-friendly environment of daily sports talk shows.
Thus, it wasn't shocking when he went 9-21 through 2.5 seasons and was fired halfway through 2025 (Vincent, notably, is 8-16 after taking over at Louisiana-Monroe, a program that hasn't had a winning season since 2012). The change in title led him, thankfully, back to Lipscomb Academy rather than ESPN. He's currently prepping for his first season back in Tennessee since 2022.
Dilfer's time at UAB was filled with weird coaching platitudes that had little meaning below the surface and a whole bunch of losses. His 2026 season at Lipscomb promises at least one of those things.

Well, aside from being mostly worthless as a schedule and incredibly easy as a geocaching exercise, it's a pretty cocky statement. Dilfer's schedule is 11 weeks and a postseason against a lineup of opponents who don't even command the respect to be named. They're superfluous, because Lipscomb's only real threat is its own mistakes. There is a 95 percent chance that Dilfer, at some point this season, delivers a pep talk that drops the line "what if the enemy... is the inner me?"
So, good news Lipscomb opponents! You've already got your bulletin board material from a team that thinks it's so much better than you that you don't even deserve mention. And, bad news Lipscomb fans! Your schedule just got a lot more inscrutable.
