A developing tropical storm is expected to pass directly over the Hawaiian Islands beginning as early as Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The disturbance, labeled Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C, was located 935 miles east-southeast of Hilo early Wednesday. It was expected to become a tropical storm by about nightfall.

Developing storm takes aim at Hawaii.

It’s too soon to predict exact landfall locations, but the National Hurricane Center cautioned residents to expect heavy rainfall and possible flooding, and to "have a preparedness plan in place."

An advisory reads: "Heavy rainfall associated with the system is expected to begin to impact the Big Island Friday, spreading westward into Maui on Saturday, and across Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai on Sunday.

"This

rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain."

A Hurricane or Tropical Storm Watch could be issued for these islands by early Thursday.
