At this point, Sunday night NFL announcer Cris Collinsworth's meme-like love for Patrick Mahomes is extremely well-known to pro football fans. Collinsworth is aware of all the jokes about his long-standing admiration for Mahomes and has previously said he's not going to change his tune about the Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback anytime soon. That's fair!
Because, let's be honest: Most color commentators will gravitate to players like Mahomes and the magic they're capable of whenever they're on their broadcast. It's not that abnormal to talk about the biggest names in sports more. But sometimes, even by Collinsworth's standards, he definitely takes his adulation for Mahomes way too far. We can and should admit as much.
Take a third-and-long
situation in the late third quarter of the Chiefs' 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. After Mahomes got sacked by Seattle's Derick Hall and recovered the fumble, Collinsworth really went out of his way to praise Mahomes for trying to prevent a turnover and get the ball back as it bounced on the turf amid pure chaos. C'mon now, really?
"What other quarterback is getting up twice to get that football"

I love the way Collinsworth says, "What other quarterback is getting up twice to get that football?" as if Mahomes just threw a 60-yard laser for a touchdown, instead of making an extremely anodyne possession play. What a commitment to the bit.
Mahomes is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He makes incredible plays all the time. It's why he has the reputation that he does. Why don't we save our applause for plays that are actually laudatory, no matter if we're one of his biggest fans? Ah, well, I don't expect anyone to listen to my plea here.
