Sports leagues have become the man in a hotdog costume meme when it comes to stopping the harassment of professional athletes by sports bettors. They're all trying to find the guy who did it -- because surely their partnerships with sports betting operators couldn't have played a role in the proliferation of betting and thus the inherent risks that come with it.
Nonetheless, the NFL, MLB, MLS, NBA and NHL have joined with their respective players' unions to crack down on what it called an "escalating threat," writing a letter to gaming regulators calling for "all state gaming commissions and state policymakers to promptly adopt uniform rules and legislative guardrails to help address this behavior." The leagues' proposed rules included mandatory
lifetime bans for harassment, a streamlined system for reporting harassment and holding operators accountable as a condition to maintain licensing.
With the gambling paste already out the tube, it's important the leagues joined the players in this fight. But fans found it to be disingenuous given the hypocrisy of the situation.
