The Detroit Pistons tip off their regular season in less than a month, yet the status of their star center remains a mystery. Jalen Duren, who didn't appear at media day or training camp this week, remains a restricted free agent amid a lengthy contract dispute with Detroit.
It's been quite a contentious summer between Duren and the Pistons. Detroit reportedly offered Duren a five-year, $200 million deal, but the 22-year-old is seeking something closer to the $287 million supermax he's eligible for. Until they reach an agreement, Duren is not allowed to participate in team activities, according to The Stein Line's Marc Stein.
Duren is coming off a breakout fourth season, as he earned All-Star honors by virtue of averaging 19.5 points and 10.5
rebounds. His performance dipped considerably in the playoffs, however, and that could be a reason why contract negotiations are at a stalemate.
While a sign-and-trade is unlikely at this point, here are four landing spots for Duren if Detroit decides to move its franchise center.
Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks could potentially acquire Duren for a package headlined by Onyeka Okongwu and Dyson Daniels, two quality defenders who won't shoulder as much of an offensive load as Duren. This deal helps both sides.
Milwaukee Bucks
After trading franchise centerpiece Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat, the Bucks could flip some of the assets they received for Duren, mainly Kel'el Ware. It's possible Milwaukee will want to see what it's got before moving anyone, though.
Washington Wizards
The Wizards would be wise to move Anthony Davis for Duren as he's a better fit for AJ Dybantsa's timeline. However, Davis has over $120 million left on his contract and is a significant injury risk, so the win-now upside may not be worth the risk for Detroit.
Sacramento Kings
Duren just feels like a King, but this deal is unlikely because it would likely require Domantas Sabonis. That'd be an odd fit alongside Cade Cunningham.
