At this point, legendary video game developer Hideo Kojima's track record speaks for itself.
He's the person who brought Metal Gear to life, the acclaimed stealth-action franchise with seven mainline entries and so many different spin-offs over the years. Decades after its inception, it is renowned for its influence and impact on the stealth gaming genre. Then, after splitting from his long-time company Konami, Kojima masterminded Death Stranding, the (delightfully) weird and silly (complimentary) franchise centered on "strand" mechanics, meaning a thoughtful incorporation of social gameplay with other players.
All this to say, when Kojima says a project he's working on will be incredible and a summation of his artistic sensibilities, we should
probably believe him. Enter Physint, Kojima's latest foray into the stealth-action gaming genre.
On Thursday, at the annual Tokyo Game Show, we got a new teaser (for example, actor Bill Skarsgård will play the lead character) of what Kojima plans to bring to the table in Physint. And let's just say Kojima was not shy about giving his latest IP as much hype as one might be able to imagine:

Uh, excuse me? These are some lofty promises, dearest readers.
Not only does Kojima say that Physint will be the culmination of his career over 40 years, but it will also redefine "action-espionage" gameplay. Most curiously, it will be "unbound" by the traditional confines of digital entertainment. What could that possibly mean? I won't even pretend to know what Kojima is talking about because most other people saying something like this could have their statement written off as word salad. I just know Kojima's rap sheet, how he typically frames storytelling within his games, and how he does, genuinely, push boundaries we didn't know could be pushed.
For me, that is enough to understand that the iconic video game auteur will (probably) deliver on his assurances here.
Of course, Physint is still years away from a release, especially after its recent controversial move from Sony to Xbox Game Studios. There's certainly a lot more to learn about this game in the coming years. If anyone's earned the benefit of the doubt in executing their vision, though, it's Kojima.
The early hype here already feels more than warranted.
