Mike Ditka, the Hall of Fame tight end who played six years for the Chicago Bears and later coached the franchise to a Super Bowl win in 1985, died at the age of 86. Ditka was also an on-air personality after his playing and coaching career, working in broadcasting with NBC, CBS and ESPN.
"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka," read the statement from his family. "While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever."
What was the cause of death? There was none mentioned
in the statement, but we'll update this post when we know more.
