The reigning NBA champion New York Knicks will try to become the first team to repeat in almost a decade this coming season. And they had better maximize said opportunity, because it looks like the reality of the NBA's stringent salary cap and apron rules may limit many more bites at the apple. We're already seeing that unfortunate reality start to manifest in the Knicks' ongoing contract negotiations with star big man Karl-Anthony Towns.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Knicks' contract talks with Towns have stalled at an awkward time, with New York about to start training camp for the 2026-2027 season. The situation is described as a "cloud" hanging over the Knicks right now as Towns enters the last year of his current contract with a player
option looming this coming summer.
Given Towns' pedigree and ability as a player, why is there any impasse here at all, you ask?
Well, the Knicks are already in the NBA's first salary cap apron with only just over $3 million in wiggle room before they enter the restrictive second apron. As owner James Dolan has stated before, the Knicks do not want to enter the second apron. (Note: The Denver Nuggets are the NBA's only current second-apron team.) Knowing that, simply giving Towns the four-year, $276 extension he is eligible for amid their financial situation is not something that's viable for the Knicks moving forward.

You could understand why the Knicks balking at giving Towns the money he certainly deserves would irk the veteran center. After all, it is not his problem that the Knicks don't want to enter the second apron and are drawing a line at his contract. From his perspective, they should figure it out!
The New York Post's Stefan Bondy added more clarity to the situation. He noted that the Knicks want Towns to take something of a discount from his max because they're close to the second apron and want to have more money to offer reigning NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson next year. For the time being, that does not seem like something Towns is willing to do:

Of course, just because the Knicks and Towns are at an impasse right now doesn't mean they can't reach an agreement in short order. Extension talks have stalled with the Knicks, but they apparently remain cordial and positive, which is a good sign of where things stand for the defending NBA champions and their top big man.
We'll see how this situation resolves itself moving forward. The Knicks will begin their training camp on Monday, September 28th. They open their NBA title defense on Tuesday, October 20th against the Philadelphia 76ers. Technically, the Knicks have until June 30th, 2027, to reach a new agreement with Towns, but something tells me they'll prefer to try to get it done over the next few weeks rather than let Towns' status hang over the team.
