Have you ever had the feeling that all of your hard work just went to waste? That, through no fault of your own, you just let down a football-obsessed city that embraced you like a family member? That, for a fleeting moment or two, your professional ambitions might never be the same?
That's likely what went through Caleb Williams's mind on Sunday. After the Chicago Bears star quarterback went down in a heap late in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings with what turned out to be a non-major hamstring injury, anyone watching could tell how devastated he was about the injury. Even if Williams technically didn't suffer a "severe" injury, how he reacted wasn't necessarily all about pain tolerance. Which is A-OK! Sometimes, an injury reaction is not just
about the injury itself!
However, this distinction unfortunately didn't sit well with folks who have an extremely antiquated and immature idea of masculinity and when a person is "allowed" to show any semblance of emotion and vulnerability.
The said current of toxicity did not sit well with former Chicago Bears offensive lineman and current CBS analyst Kyle Long. In response to some people predictably litigating just how animated Williams is allowed to be about getting hurt (which is pure, illogical nonsense when you think about it for more than five seconds), Long shared a perfect explanation about why Williams looked so crestfallen over what wound up being an injury that might cause him to miss a couple of games at most.

I couldn't have put it better myself. Williams understands the responsibility of being a star Bears quarterback in a city that has never had one before. He's a high-level athlete carrying the burden and pressure of being "The Guy" who could, hopefully, end a Chicago Super Bowl drought that's been going on for four decades. And for a little while there on Sunday, he thought he had lost everything he worked for on this front with such diligence and attention to detail.
There is nothing wrong with showing vulnerability in a tough injury situation. There is nothing wrong with him being emotional about getting hurt, no matter how severe it is. If anything, he should be applauded for wearing his heart on his sleeve and setting an example for all of us, rather than reacting like a stoic robot and holding it all in. Who are we to tell someone how they're allowed to react to any sort of injury or failure, intentional or unintentional? Do you know how shameful and embarrassing that sounds? Shouldn't we be better?
Any further thought process to the contrary needs to be dead and buried, both in sports and any other facet of life. Forever.
Kudos to Long for coming to Williams' defense. Kudos to Williams for unapologetically being himself and clearly not caring what other people think about how he operates as a football player and as a person.
