The New England Patriots gained a reputation for extracting every available edge in the Bill Belichick era. Some of these strategies were a clever bending of the rules. Others were, at least in the eyes of NFL leadership, a punishable example of breaking them.
One new theory puts New England, at the tail end of its eight-time Super Bowl-winning head coach's legendary tenure, in that former camp. Ryan Paganetti is a former Dartmouth running back who spent eight seasons as an analyst in NFL front offices. He'd been crunching some data and found an interesting quirk when it came to kicking field goals at the Patriots' home stadium.
When Patriots kickers lined up, the video board behind them was a true depiction of the view from the field. When opponents
did the same, they were greeted with a flipped image, creating a disorienting distortion of the uprights in front of them.

Did this make a difference? Potentially, though it's worth noting all the attempts singled out in the pictures above were successful. Former NFL Pro Bowler and current free agent kicker Graham Gano, featured in one of Paganetti's screenshots, didn't seem to think the Patriots' strategy was all that different than other gimmicks at home stadiums across the league.

Even so, it's another example of how the Patriots wrung every ounce of advantage out of their home games -- even if it's not quite as flashy as turning off Mike Tomlin's headset.
