The Boston Red Sox season is over after a Wild Card series sweep delivered by the rival New York Yankees. Sonny Gray has some issues with how their final game went down.
After finishing eighth in ERA during the regular season, Gray got only 4.2 innings of work during Wednesday's 9-2 loss. He was sitting at 70 pitches and already collected two outs, but Boston manager Chad Tracy gave him the hook to create a lefty-on-lefty matchup against Cody Bellinger.
Tracy's decision backfired spectacularly. The Boston bullpen proceeded to give up seven runs, collapsing when Tracy needed it most.
How did Sonny Gray respond to early hook vs. Yankees?
Gray made his feelings about the early hook apparent after the game.
“I’m the best pitcher in the American League going through the order the third time," Gray said.
"I think that’s a fact. I would have liked him to live or die with me in that moment, but that's the competitor I am. You could probably ask the guys and they'd feel the same way."
After turning around their season and making an improbable playoff run, the Red Sox end their year on a sour note.
