The Indiana Fever face some key decisions following the 2026 WNBA offseason, specifically in free agency. After their opening-round playoff loss to the Las Vegas Aces, the Fever are now focused on building next season's roster and making final decisions on how to approach their own impending free agents. While Kelsey Mitchell, who had a stellar season, will rightfully be the first name the Fever (should) hope to re-sign, her future remains very much up in the air.
Among several other players to monitor is Sophie Cunningham, a core piece of the Fever's second unit who consistently logged big minutes. She's proven capable of scoring, rebounding, and doing all the important things that aren't listed in the box score.
With Cunningham slated to be
a free agent, Fever general manager Amber Cox spoke about the 30-year-old guard and made two things very clear. First, Cunningham's off-court comments, which made significant headlines, will play no role in whether the Fever attempt to re-sign her. Second, Cox said the team plans to talk with Cunningham about remaining in Indiana, as Angela Moryan of WRTV Indianapolis reported.

Cox addressed the topic shortly after the Fever's postseason loss, and it seems the Fever are interested in retaining Cunningham after her first two seasons with the team. While Cunningham averaged her fewest shot attempts per game since 2021, there's no question she adapted to what the Fever needed. With players like Mitchell and Caitlin Clark leading the offensive push, Cunningham was effectively a "do-it-all" type player capable of taking on different roles.
For good measure, Cunningham had the second-best year of her career from a shooting perspective, just with slightly lower volume. She shot 46% from the field and 41.9% from three-point range.
Mitchell and Cunningham join a list of the Fever's impending free agents that also includes Myisha Hines-Allen and Tyasha Harris, among others.
