To say that Wednesday night's loss to the Seattle Seahawks was anything less than a disaster for quarterback Drake Maye would be an understatement. The New England Patriots quarterback struggled with deep throws, had one of the worst fourth quarters for a quarterback in history, and couldn't hold a 10-point second-half lead against a Seahawks team without its starting quarterback, Sam Darnold.
Maye became only the second quarterback in 30 years to throw an interception on three consecutive drives in the fourth quarter with his team leading, tied, or trailing by no more than three points before each one, as analytics guru Ryan Paganetti highlighted.

Yet, through all of the struggles, before Maye's third and final interception, the Patriots were in field goal range, had control of the clock and looked poised to send the game to overtime. Until Maye lobbed up a brutal pass to the front of the end zone that was in a spot where only the Seahawks defender could make the play, and it wound up being intercepted.
After the woeful performance, the media had plenty to say about it, but one specific Boston radio show, Patriots Postgame on 98.5 The Sports Hub, simply unloaded on Maye. Host Mark Dondero unleashed on Maye, saying the Patriots tried to "hide" Maye all night with "high school plays."
To take it one step further, Dondero said Maye made one "NFL throw" but made "high school plays all night long." He continued by adding that his final interception in the end zone was "incomprehensible and disgusting," while also citing it as "befuddling."

It's an eye-opening takeaway, but it's not wrong either. To make matters worse, when Maye threw the ball downfield, the results were as terrible as you can imagine. As Pro Football Focus highlighted, on passes of 20-plus yards, Maye was 0-of-4 with three interceptions.
It was an awful start to the 2026 NFL season for Maye, and he'll need a major bounceback in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's apparent that between last year's playoffs and Week 1, there's some concern around his play, so we'll find out if Maye can get things turned around.
