Researchers in Minnesota on Wednesday released surreal footage showing wolves hunting a deer along a lake’s frozen shoreline.
The Voyaguers Wolf Project footage, posted below, begins with the deer, on high alert, traveling rapidly amid blowing snow.
Ten minutes later, the same trail camera shows the Blackstone Pack’s breeding male picking up the deer’s scent and following its path. Three minutes later, four other wolves are shown sniffing the area and choosing the same chase trail.

It’s not clear if the hunt was successful, but the footage reveals how wolves rely on scent while hunting in harsh conditions. (Volume up for full effect.)
