Sean McVay certainly never thought the Los Angeles Rams would be here this season. It's late October, and his team is 2-4, technically sitting in last place in the NFC West after an embarrassing loss to the rival (and rebuilding!) Arizona Cardinals.
According to McVay, the biggest reason the preseason Super Bowl favorites have been falling short is that they can't stop making self-inflicted mistakes (beyond notable absences like that of Myles Garrett, of course). McVay's logic makes sense. In an NFL where the final scores of games are often within one possession, every little mistake can cost teams so dearly in the win-loss column. Three of the Rams' four losses so far this season have notably come by one score.
McVay clarified that he doesn't
know why the Rams commit so many unforced errors, but that he'd like to know why very soon, considering that it's his job to know why as their head coach. We're six games into the season. You sure hope the coach of a team with championship expectations would understand why it keeps crumbling in the worst moments!

If there's any consolation for the Rams, their schedule does open up over the next few weeks. An upcoming slate featuring the Las Vegas Raiders (who are surprisingly competitive!), the Los Angeles Chargers, and the Washington Commanders should be a golden opportunity for the Rams to climb back above .500 and get back into the NFC playoff race.
Of course, nothing is guaranteed. McVay's Rams probably thought they had an easy win gift-wrapped against the lowly Cardinals, and look what happened. McVay or not, someone better figure out what's wrong with the Rams before it's too late.
