Baseball fans in the city of Chicago have to be pretty happy right now. Both the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs clinched playoff spots on Thursday afternoon, but the way they did so was pretty incredible.
First, the White Sox clinched a playoff berth with a 9-1 win over the Kansas City Royals. Given that the White Sox are two years removed from their record 121-loss season and lost over 100 games last year, their turnaround to make the postseason has been quite remarkable. Still, the White Sox did last make the playoffs in 2021 so it's certainly been quite the half-decade for the club.
Not long after, the Cubs punched their postseason ticket by besting the Miami Marlins 2-1, securing a wild card spot for their second postseason berth in a row.
Not only is it the first time in Chicago history that the two teams clinched a playoff berth on the same day, the White Sox and Cubs also did so two minutes apart from one another!

Pretty remarkable stuff. This season marks the fourth time the Cubs and White Sox have made the playoffs in the same season, with the two teams clinching postseason berths in 1906, 2008 and 2020 before this year.
We'll just have to wait and see if the White Sox and Cubs get to play each other in the World Series this year. If so, it wouldn't be the first time we had an all-Chicago World Series, as the two teams battled it out in 1906 before the White Sox bested the Cubs in six games.
