Marcus Spears Jr., the son of former NFL defensive end and current ESPN personality, made his collegiate basketball debut against Chicago State.
The elder Spears, nicknamed Swagu, was providing coverage on before the Monday Night Football broadcast between the Chicago Bears and the Seattle Seahawks. During a segment, Swagu was shown footage of his son entering the Moody Center in Austin.
Swagu immediately became emotional as his 17-year-old son appeared on the screen. "Let's go!" exclaimed the former defensive lineman.
Here is more:
"Bro, I'm about to cry, bro ... That's crazy, bro. He done worked his [expletive] off to get here, man. [Expletive]! That is amazing. Ya'll got me with this one, man. Golly, man ... This is his second game ever in an arena
... So I got to bring America in on the background ... I called our producers and I said I don't think I'm going to come to Seattle this week because I wanted to be there for his first game. But they had an exhibition last week against St. John's and I was able to be there for him and see him play. And then I got here yesterday and I'm telling you I was down as hell that I wasn't going to be in the building. But then I thought about it and I was like, my wife and myself have prepared him to be where he at. So he'll be fine."
Swagu said he "couldn't wait" to watch his son play later that night as Spears Jr., who was a top-ten recruit coming into the season after reclassifying and foregoing his senior year of high school, took the court.
Spears Jr. finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 blocks off the bench and looked destined for a strong future in basketball.
