On a stormy day on the Lake Michigan lakefront, the Chicago Bears succumbed to the elements (and Brian Flores' blitzing defense) in a 9-3 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings. But that wasn't the worst news of the day for the Bears. Not even close.
Around halfway through the fourth quarter, star quarterback Caleb Williams went down without contact while trying to scramble to his left. Williams was visibly in a lot of pain after the fact and had to be carted off while a Chicago home crowd watched in stunned silence. Some feared that, based on the initial look of the play, Williams had a severe injury that would end his season before it had a chance to get started.
Some of those fears were quelled with the update that Williams had definitively suffered
a hamstring injury, though, without knowing the severity. Head coach Ben Johnson's update on Williams after the game was similarly encouraging from a long-term perspective and discouraging for the near future. Johnson sounded thankful that Williams likely didn't suffer a career-altering knee injury. However, he also acknowledged the possibility of a nagging hamstring injury that could be tough for Williams to shake and fully recover from this season whenever he does return to the field.
Calling such a scenario a "shame" would be an understatement for the Bears in the context of 2026, but it's definitely much better than the worst-case scenario of a career-altering ligament, tendon, or muscle tear:
Ben Johnson on Real Time Reaction on Caleb Williams' Injury:
— Bears on Real (@BearsOnReal) September 20, 2026
"You could kind of see in real time. I'm actually happy it's nothing with the knee, that was my first inclination. But the hamstring could be pretty damaging as well. So we'll see how bad it is tomorrow and we'll go… pic.twitter.com/wEY5YgerF4
Unfortunately, that's just a reality of soft-tissue injuries for high-level athletes who are in season. You never quite get to recover. I'm positive that the Bears would take this potential reality 10 times out of 10 with their franchise quarterback compared to the many grim alternatives, but it's still poor fortune given what they might lose without a fully healthy Williams this fall.
