As of Thursday, eight of the former college football players who were granted a temporary restraining order in Louisiana to gain a fifth year of eligibility had entered their names in the transfer portal. Among those players was former Ole Miss tight end Dae'Quan Wright, who is actively on the Cleveland Browns roster as an undrafted free agent.
If that sounds crazy, Browns head coach Todd Monken would agree, using that exact word in a NSFW description of the situation. "Man, this s--- is crazy. I don't even know what to say," Monken said after the team's preseason game Saturday. Wright was dressed for the game but didn't play after missing practice time with an injury.
"I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out a week ago. Now I know," Monken said.
"I didn't call him back. I guess I should have."
The thought of a football player going pro then returning to college would have been unthinkable a year ago. But after the NCAA changed its eligibility rules to allow all athletes who entered after 2022 to play five seasons, some outgoing seniors have sued to also gain a fifth year.
