A fishing boat out in the waters off Long Island, New York, has a whale of a tale -- tail? -- to tell. A humpback whale surged out of the water this week and smashed into the boat, opening a door on the vessel.
The humpback whale is not tiny. It typically ways anywhere from 50,000 to 80,000 pounds. That's quite the range but even on the low end, it is huge.
“I thought we might be going down, but the boat was OK, the whale was OK. It was just crazy,” the startled fisherman, Steven Heid, told News 12.
Those on the boat were aware of the whale's presence, spotting it from a few hundred yards away.
The whale then made its way -- quickly -- toward the boat. It knocked into the door and then went back down.
