Sydney Sweeney went viral once again for the "Just Sports" ad she did with Novig that showed her nude with various sports equipment. And now, there's been backlash coming from athletes on social media.
British runner Amy Hunt spoke out after running in the 200m in Budapest: "Sydney Sweeney, this is what women in sport look like," she told the BBC after her race.
There was also gymnast Gracie Kramer, who posted a highlight video on Instagram with a caption embedded: "Idk what Sydney Sweeney was doing, but this is what a woman in sports looks like."
Similarly, Australian swimmer Lani Pallister and British runner Lucy Davis posted similar highlight reels and caption on Instagram (see below).
They were joined by Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ariarne
Titmus in her Instagram Story (via CNN):
“I wasn’t going to share this as I didn’t want to give this any more attention. But I can’t keep my mouth shut. I can’t describe how infuriated I feel when I watch this. Not only is this a kick in the face to every woman who has dedicated her life to perfecting her craft, but every woman who enjoys sports for what it really is — teamwork, friendship, dedication, excellence, unity … the list goes on."
Why is there so much backlash from athletes to the Syndey Sweeney Novig ad?
For that answer, it's summed up by Australian surfer Felicity Palmateer to CNN:
[The ad] is very damaging, especially for young females getting into sport, for females in sport, for females in general, just hypersexualized content. ... We want to be valued for what we can do, not what we look like,”
Did Sydney Sweeney respond to the athlete backlash?
Yes. In a series of posts on Instagram Stories, she posted various ESPN The Magazine Body Issue covers over the years. There's no words to go along with the photos to explain what he point here is, but maybe Sweeney will respond further soon.
