The San Francisco 49ers need receiving help. Recent high value draft picks Ricky Pearsall and De'Zhaun Stribling are on injured reserve, as is Christian Kirk. Leading veterans Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel are on the wrong side of 30 years old and carry significant injury risk on a team whose hard practice schedule leads to significant wear and tear. Demarcus Robinson is more reliable from a health standpoint, but is also 32 and brings his own consistency issues to the lineup.
Thus, after a 2-0 start, it makes sense San Francisco would be proactive in its search for reinforcements. One former All-Pro happens to be under contract. But Brandon Aiyuk's standoff with the franchise that drafted, then extended him with a $120 million contract, has been
a gigantic mess that has thrown in doubt whether the mercurial wideout will ever play in the NFL again.
Would head coach Kyle Shanahan activate him from the reserve/left squad list? His answer was crystal clear.

"No." No follow up. No explanation. Just "no." Given the drama Aiyuk has invited since his standoff with team officials over his rehabilitation from a torn ACL suffered in 2024, it's a reasonable stance. The 49ers aren't in great shape. One more injury could chip away at the structure of the entire offense. But even if it gets dire, there's no avenue for Aiyuk to return to the San Francisco active roster.
