Nebraska coach Matt Rhule announced changes to the offensive staff for Friday's game against Illinois, but not the changes many expected. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen and offensive line coach Geep Wade will move from the field to the press box.
Holgorsen has been under heavy criticism since Nebraska's 17-10 loss to Washington last Saturday. The offense has only scored 41 points during the Huskers' three-game losing streak.
Rhule said Holgorsen initially mentioned the change of location. The Husker head coach believes the move to the booth will let his offensive coordinator review every aspect of the unit without having to interact with everyone on the sideline.
"I want everyone to feel empowered, so Dana has a huge part in that. I do not
want Dana depressed, though. I want Dana to look at why and just keep going out and being him. When Anthony struggles, it means Glenn Thomas and Dana struggle, which means I struggle, and that means maybe the scouts team, so we are looking at: do we practice this well? Did we do this? Are we doing too many plays? Are we doing too many? I think we are looking at everything and saying to ourselves, “Well, why is this happening?”
Nebraska hits the road this Friday for a weeknight showdown at Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Fox.
Nebraska and Illinois are no strangers to Friday night games. This is the third straight Husker-Illini contest on a Friday night, including 2023 in Champaign and 2024 in Lincoln.
This is the 23rd matchup all-time between these two schools. Nebraska holds a 14-7-1 series advantage.
