Indiana coach Curt Cignetti met with the media following his team's 20-17 victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Hoosiers have won 22 consecutive games, the fifth-longest winning streak by a Big Ten team in the past 80 years. Indiana has posted a 33-2 record under coach Curt Cignetti.
The loss marks Nebraska’s 31st straight loss to ranked teams. The Huskers last defeated a ranked team in 2016, when they beat the Oregon Ducks 35-32.
The Indiana head coach talked about the effort it took to win Saturday's game.
“I’m not sure it’s completely sunk in, well it’s starting to, that we won because it took everything the players and coaches had in that one to find a way to overcome. Give Nebraska a lot of credit. Really good football team. I thought
we did a nice job of regrouping at halftime. And defense gave up three points in the second half and the offense made just enough plays. It’s a great win on the road, it was hard-fought. A win like that has a lot of value.”
Nebraska held Indiana to 328 total yards. The Hoosiers gained 155 of their yards on three plays. The Husker defense limited Indiana to 65 rushing yards on 22 attempts, including just 12 rushing yards in the first half.
The Hoosiers entered the game ranked ninth nationally, averaging 252.6 yards per game. Cignetti said it was clear Nebraska was trying to stop the run.
“Early on it was obvious they were committed to stopping the run and a certain RPO. And we really never quite got the run game going. I thought we’d run the ball better than we did but we’ll deal with that tomorrow in our evaluation of why. Probably they decided that they had to stop the run, number one, and do the best they could versus the pass. So at the end of the day, we won the one-on-one matchups in the pass game and made one more play than they did.”
With the loss, Nebraska fell to 9-12-3 all-time against Indiana. Nebraska returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Oregon. Kickoff time is still TBD. The Hoosiers will travel to Columbus to face the Ohio State Buckeyes.
